iPad 3 Speculations

Written by Hugo Pethebridge on September 22, 2011.

With the brag-worthy iPad 2 hot off the presses, Apple puts the recent past behind them and gears up for the next big thing: the iPad 3.

Staying up with Apple’s latest products is like riding an endless rollercoaster equipped with plenty of rises, loops, dark tunnels, ill informed park staff and the best part, the drop.

Apple lives for the drop. When a new Apple product is announced, there is anticipation. It builds. It climbs. It peaks. Then the products drops, and pandemonium ensues.

What can we expect from the iPad 3? What will cause the pandemonium this time?

iCloud

Cloud computing is an icon in a technological revolution. Think Joan of Arc in the 21st Century.

iCloud uses cloud computing to offer uninhibited access to everything on your computer. With iCloud installed on your iPad, or whichever iGadget you have handy, you can access all of your documents, music, movies, apps or pictures. Any Apple product that’s signed into your iCloud account will automatically sync, if desired. So, if you’re vacationing with your iPad, but not your laptop and you can’t live without your “2011 Summer Beach Vacations Rule” playlist, don’t fret– iCloud lets you enjoy it regardless of the space/time continuum.

iCloud does cost a bit of money. You can buy up to 55 gigs for 100 bucks per year. The only foreseeable problem is the manual control features. Apple likes to take the reigns and sync everything you’ve ever uploaded to any product in your life to every gadget you own. Hopefully the iPad 3?s iCloud service has a way of letting you manually override automatic syncing. The iCloud feature will be a default in any operating system past Lion, including iOS 5 and will be added to earlier operating systems.

A Retina Display, Less Shiny

If you switched from the iPhone 3 to the iPhone 4, you’re already familiar with how remarkable a retina display looks. One of the biggest complaints with the pre-existing iPad is the shininess. People aren’t as interested in looking in a mirror as they are with actually seeing whatever their iPad has on screen.

With the retina display, you’ll be able to see what’s on your screen. Though the retina display was anticipated for the iPad 2, Apple didn’t quite come through. It’s been rumored that the iOS 5 coding calls for a retina display, and we can all cross our fingers that the rumors are true.

SD Card Slot, Thunderbolt Port

Convenience reigns. And, what’s the point in having a convenient tablet computer without convenient inputs?

With a new display in the works, the iPad 3 suggests prime-viewing quality for your beach vacation pictures that you took while listening to your “2011 Summer Beach Vacations Rule” playlist. With an SD card slot built into the iPad 3, you won’t have to wait until you get home to view your pictures. How much more convenient could it get?

What about a Thunderbolt port? The 2011 model of the MacBook Pro as well as the MacBook Air feature the new port called Thunderbolt. It’s faster than USB and can support higher quality and more sophisticated accessories or displays. And Apple is all about sophistication, quality and speed.

New Processor, More Storage

Processing speed and storage space are a classic Apple move for upping the ante on new releases. The iPad 3 will include either an A5 or an A6 dual-core processor depending on the release date. Some speculate an A6 quad-core processor, pushing the release date back until 2012.

In terms of storage, the iPad 2 offers 16, 32 and 64 gigs of storage. With the iPad 3, we might be able to expect storage as high as 128 GB.

Possible Release Date?

The anticipation of the drop before it actually happens is what makes the ride worth it in the end. So, how long do we have to climb in anticipation before the rush?

Depending on the specifications and features of the iPad 3, plus the release of the iPhone 5, we could be looking at a November date. Having two drops so close could be a serious flub on Apple’s part, so the release of the iPad 3 will likely be spaced appropriately from the iPhone 5, either coming in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, or in the first quarter of 2012. As always, only time will tell.
